Illegal charges and slow service at health facilities worry Angoche communities

Although the directors of the health units and technicians from the district health services claim that the problems raised are a thing of the past, the fact is that the communities continue to complain about illegal charges and slow service at various health centers in the Angoche district, Nampula province.

The disagreement was expressed during the debate on the results of the evaluation of the quality of health and education services using the Community Score Card (CPC) tool, an activity led by CESC, in partnership with the district civil society platform, as part of the implementation of the Pro-Civic and Human Rights project, supported by the Finnish Embassy in Mozambique.

The assessment using the CPC tool was carried out in 15 schools and 05 health units in the Angoche district. In addition to the problems discussed at the event to present the results, the evaluation found other problems in the health sector, such as precarious infrastructure, lack of water and lack of "mother-in-waiting homes" - homes that house and support expectant mothers during their last month of pregnancy and who live far from health facilities.

In education, the evaluation found problems such as a lack of energy, water and toilets in schools, insufficient classrooms and other issues related to student learning. In addition to presenting the results, the event held last Thursday (August 22) was also used to draw up the district plan, a document that contains actions to follow up on the problems found.

The CPC is a tool that informs community members about the services available and their rights, and asks for their opinions on the degree of access and quality of the services provided. It also has the advantage of being a platform for dialogue between public service providers and communities.
